Day 18: Protein Shakes – Myoplex Lite vs Muscle Milk Light

As one of the 5-6 meals, I’ve generally been drinking a protein shake. I know it is cheaper to buy the powder and mix it up yourself, but I just bought a round of the pre-packaged ones to try out. They do cost a little more, but if you buy them in bulk and try to find a coupon you can generally get one for around $1.50. Right now, I have a variety of two types that I’m rotating between:
Muscle Milk and Myoplex Lite
I picked up a 24-pack of the Myoplex Lite Chocolate Fudge at Amazon for $39.84 ($1.66 each). This was about the same price as at our local grocery store, but it’s hard to beat the convenience of having them delivered to your front door. I haven’t tried it yet, but Amazon offers 15% off if you sign up to have them delivered automatically each month (or every 2nd or 3rd month — you choose the frequency). Not a bad idea. I’ve been thinking about doing that with all of our common household items. Figure out how often we go through them and sign up on Amazon for auto-delivery so we don’t ever have to think about those things and can save time at the grocery store.

Back on topic…I picked up the Muscle Milk Light at Costco when they had a $6 off coupon. I don’t remember what I paid for them, but I believe it was around the same per package. Now, to compare the two. The Muscle Milk tastes better, but probably because it has twice the fat…and that is even with the light version! 2g vs 4g. It’s not a true one-to-one comparison, though, as the Muscle Milk Light is more concentrated (8.25 oz vs 11 oz). Each containst 20g of protein. The Muscle Milk has only 9g of carbs, though, compared to Myoplex Lite’s 20g. As far as all around nutrition goes, the Myoplex Lite has more nutritional value than the Muscle Milk Light.

There really is no clear winner in my mind. Both shakes are good and have their strengths. I like to stock multiple protein shakes for variety so I don’t get tired of one particular brand and burn out. I used to cringe at the idea of drinking a protein shake years ago, but really like the taste of them now. Maybe it’s an acquired taste, or maybe they have just gotten better at making them taste good over the years. Either way, they’re great to down after a workout.

Day 9: Nutritional Information at Restaurants

Day 2 on the road started off with a good 2 mile, 20 minute interval run on the treadmill. After that followed breakfast at the Westin. They have a pretty good buffet with lots of good fresh fruit. I had some scrambled eggs (kept to the palm size serving as recommended on Body For Life) and some fresh blueberries and raspberries.
Breakfast at the Westin
After breakfast I hit work for meetings all day long. Midway through the morning I had a Myoplex Lite Chocolate Fudge protein drink. I carted a few from home with me in my suitcase, put them in my fridge at the hotel, then took one with me to the office this morning and threw it in the fridge in their breakroom. It stayed cold util consumed mid-morning. Very tasty when cold – not so much when room temperature.
Do not consume when warm
Lunch was catered in with sandwiches, chips, cookies, and sodas. Fortunately they had bottled water too, so I opted for the bottled water. The sandwiches were in halves and didn’t have any dressing on them and were actually pretty healthy. I had half of a sandwich with turkey, ham, lettuce & tomato. A few hours later I ate the other half. I was able to successfully stay away from the chips, cookies, and sodas.

Once all of our meetings were over, everyone went to the Hyatt for drinks. I politely declined the drinks and enjoyed an ice water. If anyone asked, I told them I was on a body building plan and was eating/drinking healthy. No one gave me crap about it, which was nice. Then we went to dinner at Houlihan’s. I again ordered water to and after 5 or 6 glasses surprisingly only had to leave the table once to go pee.

When it came time to decide what food to order, I looked closely over the menu. There were a few options that looked healthy, but looks can be deceiving. When trying to figure out what is healthy at a restaurant and what is not, menus can often fool you. Most places will give you a list of the nutritional information if you ask for it. Sometimes they even have a separate menu that has all of the nutritional facts about each dish. Tonight, though, I turned to technology. I very inconspicuously searched Google for Houlihan’s nutritional information. They had all of their nutritional information readily available online. With modern technology it is making it easier to be more conscientious about our food choices. It was hard to find anything under 1000 calories. The first thing I looked for was chicken or fish dishes. I figured the Salmon would be pretty low in calories and high in protein. Even within the Salmon, though, one option was almost 250 calories more than the other one. The Wood Grilled Salmon came with mashed potatoes and broccoli as the sides and was 788 calories. The Simply Prepared instead had a panzanella bread salad and grilled asparagus as the sides, but only clocked in at 554 calories. I ordered the Simply Prepared, but they accidentally brought me out the mashed potatoes and broccoli as the sides. I had to send it back to get the right order, but they finally got it right.

The Salmon was delicious and contained 44g of protein. I easily could have eaten 1000-2000 calories without hardly trying. Appetizers were passed around the table which looked very good, but I politely declined them. My entree even came with a soup or salad. Not realizing this, when asked by the waiter I quickly chose the french onion soup thinking that it would be mainly broth. I looked up the calorie content of the french onion soup after the waiter left and realized it was 248 calories just for the soup. I discreetly pulled the waiter aside and told him that he didn’t have to bring the soup – that I would be fine with just the main dish. Restaurants really like to serve you a lot of food these days. Even the portion of Salmon was probably a little larger than it should be, but at only 554 calories for the whole meal I didn’t balk at it. I ate everything except for the few pieces of panzanella bread that came with it, so I was probably actually less than 500 calories.

After I got back to the hotel later that night, I consumed some beef jerky and an all natural fruit strip for my last meal. Heading to bed now and will be hitting lower body first thing in the morning. If you learned one thing at all from this post, ask restaurants for the nutritional information when eating out. You’ll be surprised that many times what you think is healthy sometimes is really not!

Day 7: Beginning of Week 2 – and some DDR

Week 2 started for me today and I got right back on Body For Life after my day off. So far most of my posts have been related primarily to nutrition and I haven’t talked much about the exercise portion of it. I hit the gym Monday through Friday this week, running on Tue/Thu and lifting weights Mon/Wed/Fri. My designated running days are Sunday/Tue/Thu. I generally use the treadmill at the gym to do the interval running (more details to come soon about my exact routine).

On Sundays I have a hard time getting myself out the door and to the gym. I’ve decided for the Cardio piece on Sunday instead of running I will do at least 30 minutes of DDR at home. If you’re not familiar with DDR, it stands for Dance Dance Revolution. First released in 1998 by Konami in Japan, it made it’s way to the United States and swept across the nation in arcades everywhere. Eventually it made it’s way to gaming consoles where you could play it in the comfort of your own home. In DDR, you use a dance pad with four arrows – up, down, left and right. The dance music plays and arrows travel across the screen to the beat of the music. You stomp on the correct arrow when it reaches the white arrows:
DDR
They now have DDR games for most all platforms including PS2, XBox 360, Wii and PS3.

About 9 or 10 years ago Allison and I were sitting around one day and talking about Dance Dance Revolution. She thought that sounded like fun and wanted to get it. When I broke the news to her that it was on the PS2 platform and that we only had a Gamecube, she stated “well, let’s get a PS2 then.” My response was (imagine Eeyore’s voice) “I guess we’ll have to get a PS2 then.” 😉 I’ve treasured that moment for 10 years now – the moment my wife actually encouraged me to go buy a video game system. The first month we had the PS2 and DDRMax I lost 10 pounds! It was so much fun – and had you work up a sweat too. Since then I’ve built some custom DDR pads that make it much better than the original pads that slip and slide around on the floor. Maybe I’ll post a video at some point of my DDR. For now, I’ll be pulling out the ol’ DDR pads every Sunday to get my cardio in.

Day 3: My Big FatSecret

One of the most important things that you can do when trying to lose weight is to track everything that you eat. It’s amazing how differently your decision making goes when you know you’re going to have to write down what you eat. At a minimum you should record the number of calories taken into your body in some sort of log or notebook.

With technology making our lives easier these days, you can record everything on the computer or using your phone. I recommend using a website that tracks what you eat. Not only will it show you how many calories you are eating each day, but how much fat, sugar, carbs, etc. There a many different websites out there that will allow you to do this. Many of them even come with mobile phone apps to make it even easier to record what you eat. Here are a few that you can try:

Livestrong.com’s MyPlate:

I haven’t used MyPlate myself, but have heard that it is pretty good.
About.com’s Calorie Count:

I used Calorie Count for a while and liked it a lot…until I found:
FatSecret!
FatSecret - All Things Food and Diet

I work in the software industry and am a big fan of open source software. The idea of open source software in a nutshell is to share the awesomeness of software that you wrote with others to enjoy for free. The original source of the code is freely available for you to change if you want to make it better. Many open source projects are done in collaboration with multiple people across the globe working together to write great software. A few examples of open source software that many of you may have have already used or heard of are:

Firefox Web BrowserRobust Email ClientFree Office SoftwareAwesome Free Open Source Image Tool

When I came across FatSecret, I loved the idea that the entire database of foods is editable by all members. Calorie Count had an approval process and seemed kind of slow and clunky – especially once I switched to FatSecret. Food Makers will change their labels from time to time. If you see an entry for a food that has a problem – just edit it. Bought a store brand that is not listed in the database? Add it yourself right then and there to the FatSecret database. The idea of an open source community type of nutrition tracking website had me from first sight.

I will be documenting all of the food that I eat while I’m on Body For Life over at FatSecret.com. My Fatsecret ID is:
